Milwaukee Dancing Grannies to Honour Fallen Members at Waukesha Christmas Parade on Sunday, One Year After Tragedy
A year on from the tragic event that claimed the lives of four members of the Milwaukee Dancing Grannies during a Christmas parade, the group will pay tribute to their lost loved ones during this weekend's festivities.
The Waukesha Christmas Parade takes place on Sunday, and for the Grannies, it brings back painful memories of the fatal incident that occurred last November when a man drove through the parade route, killing six people and injuring nearly 70 others.
"Knowing that our fallen four are not here with us but then also going back to Waukesha knowing that that's where their last steps were," said Jean Knutson, co-leader of the Milwaukee Dancing Grannies.
The group plans to honour its fallen members by carrying poster-size pictures of each victim during the parade, with some family members set to join them. Additionally, gift bags containing 'Granny Strong' and 'Waukesha Strong' bracelets will be distributed as a token of gratitude to the community for their support.
"It's the love and support of the communities that are empowering us to make us continue to move forward," Knutson said.
The Milwaukee Dancing Grannies, who describe themselves as a sisterhood, have been bonded together by tragedy but are taking steps towards healing. "We're building new memories but never forgetting what we had," Knutson said.
Details of the 2022 Waukesha Christmas Parade:
- The parade takes place on Sunday and is hosted by the city of Waukesha (waukesha-wi.gov).
- This year's event is expected to attract large crowds, with festive floats, music, and performances taking centre stage.
- In addition to the Milwaukee Dancing Grannies, various other community groups and organisations will be participating in the parade.
- Security measures have been increased this year following last year's tragic incident.
The Grannies' tribute during Sunday's parade is a poignant reminder of the enduring impact of last year's tragedy and the resilience of those affected by it.
