Harvard University Confirms Larry Summers' Resignation Over Epstein Ties
Former Treasury Secretary and current Harvard professor, Lawrence H. Summers, has announced his intention to retire from all university roles at the end of the academic year due to ties with the late Jeffrey Epstein. The announcement comes after a series of emails between Summers and Epstein were made public in November.
Summers will remain on leave until the conclusion of the current academic year, according to a Harvard spokesperson's statement. He has already stepped back from various public commitments following the release of these communications. Besides resigning from his position at AI company OpenAI and multiple roles at Bloomberg News, The New York Times, and the Center for American Progress, Summers also announced his departure from Harvard.
In a statement released Wednesday, Summers expressed gratitude for the opportunity to teach and work with students and colleagues at Harvard over five decades, beginning as a graduate student in 1971. He looks forward to engaging in research, analysis, and commentary on global economic issues, once freed from formal responsibilities as President Emeritus and a retired professor.
Summers served as Harvard's president from 2001 to 2006 and held the position of Treasury Secretary under President Bill Clinton between 1999 and 2001. He also worked as Director of the National Economic Council in the Obama administration from 2009 to 2011.
Among documents from Epstein's estate released by the House Oversight Committee in November, dozens of messages between Summers and Epstein were uncovered. Although no accusations of wrongdoing have been made against Summers, emails showed regular communication between him and Epstein both before and after Epstein pleaded guilty to prostitution charges in Florida but before his federal sex trafficking arrest in 2019.
