Trump Revokes Endorsement of Hurd Over Tariff Disagreement; Backs Opponent Scheppelman Instead

In a Saturday statement on Truth Social, President Donald Trump withdrew his endorsement of Republican Representative Jeff Hurd of Colorado, citing disagreement over tariff policies. Trump stated that Hurd's lack of support for the "unbelievably successful TARIFFS imposed on Foreign Countries and Companies" led to the decision.

Trump has instead endorsed Hurd's primary opponent, Hope Scheppelman. Colorado's Republican primary is scheduled for June 30, with Scheppelman expressing gratitude for Trump's endorsement in a social media post. She pledged to help Trump repair the economy and country damaged by Biden and the Democrats, vowing to "ensure America remains affordable for working families."

Hurd's office has yet to respond to NBC News' request for comment on the president's announcement. Originally endorsing Hurd in October, Trump praised the congressman for his efforts in securing the border, supporting the military and veterans, advancing American energy dominance, growing the economy, cutting taxes and regulations, promoting "MADE IN THE U.S.A.", defending the Second Amendment, and ensuring "PEACE THROUGH STRENGTH."

Currently serving his first term, Hurd won Colorado's third district election in November 2024 by a five-point margin. Notably, Hurd was one of six Republican members of the House to vote to terminate Trump’s tariffs on Canada on Feb. 11. Trump threatened political retribution against GOP Congress members who voted against his tariffs in a subsequent post.

In a statement on Truth Social, former President Donald Trump criticized Republican congressman Will Hurd for his vote against certain tariff policies, which were subsequently struck down by the Supreme Court last Friday. Hurd, in response, affirmed his support for Trump's goal of fair and reciprocal trade but emphasized the importance of Congress' role in trade policy.

In a separate social media post, political commentator Randy Scheppelman criticized Hurd for his vote against tariffs, echoing Trump's sentiments. Trump has previously withdrawn endorsements from Republican representatives Mo Brooks and Marjorie Taylor Greene due to disagreements over policy matters.

Greene, a staunch supporter of Trump, faced criticism from the former President last year over her stance on releasing the Epstein files and support for Israel. After announcing her resignation from Congress, Trump rescinded his endorsement for her re-election campaign.

On Saturday, Trump endorsed Scheppelman, a Navy veteran and former vice chairwoman of the Colorado Republican Party, for Colorado's 3rd Congressional District. Trump noted that unlike Hurd, Scheppelman aligns with his political views.

In a recent social media post, President Donald Trump asserted that U.S. Representative Will Hurd "will never let you down." The president's statement was in response to Hurd's criticism of certain tariff policies implemented by the administration. Trump accused Hurd of prioritizing foreign interests over the United States, stating, "More interested in protecting Foreign Countries that have been ripping us off for decades than he is the United States of America."

Following the Supreme Court's ruling on Friday to nullify most of President Trump's tariff policies, the president suggested that the decision may have been influenced by foreign interests. At a press conference on Friday, President Trump stated, "I think that foreign interests are represented by people that I believe have undue influence." He did not elaborate on the nature of this alleged influence, merely suggesting that it could be due to fear, respect, or friendships.
