NASA's University Innovation Project: Aims and Strategies
NASA’s University Innovation (UI) project is designed to foster university-led innovation, addressing the agency's Aeronautics Research Mission Directorate's (ARMD) complex system-level challenges. Through independent, NASA-alternate-path, multi-disciplinary awards, the UI project supports research that complements NASA’s objectives.
Strategic Goals
The UI project’s strategic goals are structured to achieve maximum impact, with the primary aim being to assist in achieving aviation outcomes defined in the ARMD Strategic Implementation Plan through NASA-complementary research. The second goal is to ensure the transition of research results to stakeholders, fostering the continuation of research initiatives. The third goal is to provide broad opportunities for students, including both graduate and undergraduate levels, to engage in aeronautics research.

The UI project’s strategic goals are realized through two key opportunities, both available via NASA Research Announcement (NRA) awards.
### University Leadership Initiative (ULI)
The University Leadership Initiative (ULI) offers universities the chance to propose and lead technical challenges, defining interdisciplinary solutions, and establishing peer review mechanisms. This initiative is tailored to address the most complex challenges associated with ARMD’s strategic thrusts, thereby accelerating progress toward high-impact outcomes. Principal investigators are encouraged to actively explore transition opportunities and pursue follow-on funding from stakeholders and industrial partners.
### University Students Research Challenge (USRC)
The University Students Research Challenge (USRC) aims to develop novel aeronautics concepts by stimulating research among U.S. students. This program provides grants for aeronautics projects and encourages the creation of crowdfunding campaigns to raise additional cost-sharing funds. By engaging in this process, students can develop entrepreneurial skills, enhancing their overall academic and professional experience.
Gateways to Blue Skies
Gateways to Blue Skies is a comprehensive initiative that expands engagement between universities, NASA’s University Innovation Project, industry, and government partners. Each year, it presents multi-disciplinary teams of students with significant challenges and opportunities in the aviation industry, guided by a focus on new technologies and environmentally and socially conscious aviation. This initiative ensures a continuous pipeline of innovative solutions for the future of aviation.
