OSHA Initiates Investigation into Worker Death at Rivian Warehouse

OSHA investigates worker's death at Rivian warehouse in Illinois. Probe aims to determine circumstances of fatal accident.

Investigation Initiated by OSHA

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has launched an investigation into the death of a 61-year-old worker, Kevin Lancaster, who died after being pinned between a tractor trailer and a loading dock at a Rivian warehouse in Illinois. The probe, which could take up to six months, aims to determine the circumstances of the incident.

Incident Details and Response

Local authorities reported that Lancaster died from "blunt traumatic compressional injuries." He was trapped for approximately 20 minutes before firefighters managed to free him. Emergency crews were dispatched at 1:40 p.m. local time, and Lancaster was pronounced dead at 2:33 p.m. at a nearby medical center. Rivian issued a statement expressing sympathy and cooperation with the investigation by the Normal Police Department.

Ongoing Safety Concerns and Violations

The safety of Rivian's factory in Normal, Illinois, has been under scrutiny since a Bloomberg News report in 2024 highlighted 16 "serious" violations across that year and the previous one. Despite these concerns, Rivian has not faced additional significant violations since the report. OSHA acknowledged in 2024 that Rivian had improved its safety and health team and was cooperative with the OSHA process.

Facility and Production

Rivian's factory in Normal is a 4.3-million-square-foot facility where the company assembles its flagship R1 pickup truck, R1 SUV, and commercial electric van, the EDV. The company is planning to expand the space by an additional 1.1 million square feet to accommodate its next EV, the R2. Once complete, the factory will have the capacity to assemble 215,000 vehicles.
