Discover how Circle's USYC token is leading the expansion of tokenized U.S. Treasuries, surpassing BUIDL with $2.2 billion in supply.
Tokenized U.S. Treasuries Market Expansion
The market for tokenized U.S. Treasuries has seen significant growth, with Circle's USYC token emerging as the leading provider. As of the latest data, USYC's supply has expanded to approximately $2.2 billion, overtaking BlackRock’s USD Institutional Digital Liquidity Fund (BUIDL) from Securitize, which currently holds around $2 billion in assets.
Market Leadership and Competition
USYC's market share has surged, pushing BUIDL's dominance to a mere 18% from its peak of 46% in May. This shift is attributed to increased competition, with new entrants vying for market share. BUIDL's issuer, Securitize, did not respond to requests for comment as of the press deadline.
Advantages of Tokenized U.S. Treasuries
Tokenized real-world assets, including Treasury bills and money-market funds, are gaining popularity among crypto traders and institutional investors. These assets serve as yield-generating collateral and a means to park on-chain cash. Unlike traditional financial infrastructure, blockchain-based tokens offer several key advantages:
- **Instant Settlement**: Near-instant settlement capabilities enhance the liquidity and efficiency of transactions.
- **Transparency**: Transparent reserves ensure accountability and trust.
- **Around-the-Clock Access**: Continuous access to assets, free from geographical or operational constraints.
Moreover, tokenized U.S. Treasuries provide an additional benefit: the ability to earn interest while using the assets as collateral in trading strategies. This feature potentially improves capital efficiency compared to holding stablecoins or cash.
Circle's Market Entry and Growth
Circle entered the tokenized fund market after acquiring Hashnote, the issuer of USYC, in early 2025. USYC's recent expansion is notably linked to its activity on BNB Chain, where it serves as off-exchange collateral for institutional derivatives trading. Since its launch in July, USYC's supply on BNB Chain has grown to $1.84 billion.
Market Dynamics and Future Prospects
A closer look at the broader tokenized Treasury market reveals a booming landscape. Data from RWA.xyz indicates that the sector has reached a new high of over $11 billion in market value, with a growth of approximately $2.5 billion since the beginning of the year, marking a 27% increase. The growth accelerated during the January crypto market downturn, suggesting that some investors are using tokenized Treasuries to earn steady yields while waiting for opportunities to redeploy capital into digital assets.
Circle CEO Jeremy Allaire expressed pride in the rapid growth of tokenized treasuries and repos as collateral. "Tokenized treasuries and repos as collateral is a major emerging use case, and we are proud of how quickly this has grown," he stated in a recent post on X.
