"New York Assembly Member Alex Bores Faces $100M AI-Backed Opposition Campaign"

In late 2021, New York Assembly member Alex Bores found himself at the center of a campaign by pro-AI super PAC Leading the Future, aimed at derailing his congressional bid. The group, backed by over $100 million from investors including Andreessen Horowitz, OpenAI President Greg Brockman, AI search startup Perplexity, and Palantir co-founder Joe Lonsdale, sought to undermine Bores' political ambitions.

In response, Bores adopted a defiant stance: welcome the challenge. Now, bolstered by support from Public First Action, a PAC funded with a $20 million donation from Anthropic, Bores is receiving a boost of $450,000 in his bid for New York's 12th congressional district, according to Bloomberg reports. Similar to its rival, Public First Action advocates for AI, but with an emphasis on transparency, safety standards, and public oversight.

Meanwhile, Leading the Future has already invested $1.1 million in advertisements criticizing Bores, primarily due to his sponsorship of New York's RAISE Act. This legislation mandates major AI developers to disclose safety protocols and report serious misuse of their systems.
