International News: United States-Venezuela Relations Escalate as Maduro Aide Hangs in Balance
In an assertion that could further strain U.S.-Venezuelan relations, Christopher Sabatini, a senior research fellow on Latin America at Chatham House think tank, states that Venezuela is now regarded by President Trump as a protectorate of the United States. Juan Guaidó, the self-proclaimed interim president of Venezuela, serves at the discretion of the U.S. president, according to Sabatini's remarks.
Guaidó, who has been a subject of investigation by the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), faces allegations that have not led to a conviction or indictment. However, the mere threat of incriminating evidence against him has persisted. The DEA declined to comment on these investigative matters when approached by the BBC.
